While biological sex is assigned at birth, gender refers to the roles and identities shaped by social and cultural contexts. Gender is a key factor in perpetuating discrimination and oppression in society. Around the world, many women and girls face restrictions on their choices and actions due to their gender, and often experience structural gender discrimination and violence. JICA has been addressing these issues by working to reform discriminatory systems and structures in society and organizations, while also promoting initiatives aimed at empowering women and girls. This feature introduces efforts aimed at creating a society where everyone can live with dignity, free from gender-based limitations.
