For the first time worldwide, they showed the entire thermo-chemical process chain under real conditions. The new solar mini-refinery stands on the roof of the ETH laboratory in Zurich; with the help of the solar reactor, both methanol and kerosene can be produced. The plant proves the feasibility of the technology, even under the climatic conditions in Zurich and produces around one deciliter of fuel per day. The ETH- researchers expect a CO2-neutral aviation, as the sustainable technology is on the brink of the industrial breakthrough. ETH-Professor Aldo Steinfeld has invested more than ten years in this project. At a facility near Madrid, the EU- project "Sun to Liquid" has been testing the process for three years outside the laboratory. It uses the solar reactor developed by ETH-Zurich; it is ten times bigger than the pilot plant in Zurich. With an area of just under two tennis courts, 169 movable mirrors, so-called heliostats, concentrate the sunlight onto a tower. From the research group of Professor Steinfeld two "Spin-off" emerged; "Synhelion" was born in 2016 and is working to bring the technology for the production of solar fuels onto the market. "Climeworks" was founded back in 2010 and commercializes the technology for the capture of CO2 directly from the air. Also the Italian oil company "ENI" invests in this technology; together with "Synhelion", "ENI" wants to put the first commercial plant into operation by 2025. It is not yet clear where it will be located; the mirror area shall be 400 times larger than the facility near Madrid. A solar plant with an area of one square kilometer could produce 20,000 liters of kerosene per day, said Dr. Philipp Furler Co-founder of "Synhelion". Solar-produced kerosene has the advantage that unlike green fuels, no agricultural land is displaced. In Switzerland, almost nobody eats these pieces of the pig any more, in China, however, these parts are in great demand and a delicacy. On June 14, 2019, Chinese Vice Minister Zhang Jiwen from the Customs Administration met the Swiss Minister of Economic Affairs for a working visit in Berne. On that occasion, the Chinese minister announced that five Swiss meat processing companies had received the Chinese "registration"; these companies are now allowed to deliver pork products to China. These Swiss enterprises had to undergo a lengthy, exhaustive registration- and inspection process in advance. In 2012, Chinese inspectors made inspections of Swiss companies, but they refused the import license due to alleged defects in hygiene and goods separation. In 2017, there were again Chinese inspections and further recommendations were implemented. The Chinese authorities were finally handed over an extensive dossier in November 2018. China wants to be absolutely sure that only impeccable meat products are delivered. The five meat processors have now united under the company "Swiss Nutrivalor" and built a new factory in Oensingen (SO) for CHF 20 Mio. in order to export such products. 6,000 tons of pig's trotters will be delivered to China in the future. A special "China Assembly Line" was realized so that the Chinese could introduce their own wishes. For China, the consistent separation of the pork- and beef production is particularly important; this for fear of the disease "BSE", which occurs in cattle. In China, the "African swine fever" is raging; according to the "World Food Organization" (FAO), around 100 Mio. pigs might perish up to the end of the year. This is one fifth of the total stock; China must therefore increasingly import pork. Juni 2019 besuchte der chinesische Vize-Minister Zhang Jiwen von der Zoll-Verwaltung den Schweizer Volkswirtschafts- Minister zu einem Arbeits-Besuch in Bern. Bei dieser Gelegenheit gab der chinesische Minister bekannt, dass fuenf Schweizer Fleisch- Verarbeitungs-Betriebe die "Registrierung" erhalten haetten; diese Firmen duerfen jetzt Produkte aus Schweinefleisch nach China liefern. Die Schweizer Unternehmen mussten vorgaengig ein langwieriges, aufwaendiges Registrierungs- und Inspektions-Verfahren durchlaufen. Im Jahr 2012 hatten chinesische Kontrolleure bei Inspektionen in Schweizer Firmen die Import-Bewilligung verweigert wegen angeblicher Maengel bei Hygiene und Waren-Trennung. 2017 gab es nochmals chinesische Inspektionen und es wurden weitere Empfehlungen umgesetzt. Den chinesischen Behoerden wurde schliesslich ein umfangreiches Dossier im November 2018 eingereicht. China will vollstaendig sicher sein, dass nur einwandfreie Fleischwaren geliefert werden. Die fuenf Fleisch- Verarbeiter haben sich jetzt in der Gesellschaft "Swiss Nutrivalor" zusammengeschlossen und in Oensingen (SO) eine neue Fabrik fuer 20 Mio. CHF gebaut um solche Produkte zu exportieren. 6'000 Tonnen Schweine- Fuesse werden in Zukunft nach China geliefert pro Jahr. Es wurde eine eigene "China-Linie" verwirklicht, damit die Chinesen ihre Wuensche einbringen konnten. Fuer China ist die konsequente Trennung der Produktion von Schweine- und Rindfleisch besonders wichtig; dies aus Angst vor der Krankheit "BSE", welche bei Rindern vorkommt. In China wuetet die "Afrikanische Schweine-Pest"; laut der Welt-Ernaehrungs- Organisation "FAO"duerften bis Ende Jahr rund 100 Mio. Schweine verenden. If this microbial mix is similar to that on a farm, then the children have fewer allergies. This is the conclusion of an international research team, which examined the micro-organisms in the house dust of almost 1,500 Finnish and German children and compared it with the asthma occurrence. The reason for these results is not yet completely clear. These findings were presented by a research group from the "National Institute for Health and Welfare" in Kuopio, Finland, and were published this week in the prestigious journal "Nature Medicine". Protection is not provided by individual bacteria, but rather by communities of micro- organisms. Several studies showed that farmer children have a 50% lower risk of developing asthma and allergies, said Roger Lauener, Chief Physician at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Switzerland and co- author of the current study. Various studies showed that nutritive factors also play an important protective role, for example certain short-chain fatty acids, Lauener continued. The findings that farmer children are less allergic, goes back to the Swiss school doctor Markus Gassner from Grabs (SG). He noticed the difference between the children already in the 1980s. However, the experts mistrusted his results for a long time and ignored them. It took until the 1990s, until a large study confirmed the finding. Der Grund fuer diese Ergebnisse ist noch nicht vollstaendig klar. Praesentiert wurden die Resultate von einer Forscher-Gruppe vom "National Institute for Health and Welfare" in Kupio (Finnland) und veroeffentlicht wurden sie diese Woche im angesehenen Fachblatt "Nature Medicine". Fuer den Schutz sorgen nicht einzelne Bakterien, sondern vielmehr Gemeinschaften von Mikro- Organismen. Verschiedene Studien zeigen, dass Bauern-Kinder ein bis zu 50% tieferes Risiko haben, an Asthma und Allergien zu erkranken, sagt Roger Lauener, Chefarzt am Ostschweizer Kinderspital und Mit-Autor der aktuellen Studie. Diverse Untersuchungen zeigen, dass auch Ernaehrungs- Faktoren eine wichtige schuetzende Rolle spielen, so zum Beispiel bestimmte kurz-kettige Fettsaeuern, sagte Lauener weiter. Die Erkenntnis, dass Bauern-Kinder weniger allergisch sind, geht auf den Schweizer Schularzt Markus Gassner aus Grabs (SG) zurueck. The old building was not only too small, but also in need of renovation. Although digitization is changing the work of diplomats, it cannot replace a local presence, Ambassador Rossier continued. There are currently 69 employees working at the Swiss embassy, of which 31 are Swiss nationals. As of July, four female Russian employees will join; they will be employed by "Switzerland Tourism". Switzerland enjoys Russian goodwill; therefore, it provides good diplomatic services between Russia and Georgia. These two countries have lost diplomatic relations since the 2008 Caucasus war.
