The original idea of the project has failed, is written in the article. At that time, it was a sensation when it was announced that they wanted to build the world's first CO2-neutral City. The energy concept was provided by the company Transsolar from Stuttgart and the plans for the architecture came from the British star architect Norman Foster. The faults of the City of Abu Dhabi are repeated with it; in the hot desert summer, the asphalt heats up to over 60 degrees and the city becomes an "baking oven". The Masdar City project has been criticized from the beginning; above all, investors wanted to build more and this at the expense of sustainability. Das Energie-Konzept lieferte das Unternehmen Transsolar aus Stuttgart und die Plaene fuer die Architektur stammten vom britischen Star-Architekt Norman Foster. Das ganze Areal hat eine Flaeche von 600 Hektaren. Weltweit gibt es jetzt aehnliche Projekte; Bill Gates will in der Wueste von Arizona die oekologische "Smart City Belmont" bauen lassen. In Masdar City baute man bisher jedoch erst wenige Gebaeude; ein Forschungs-Institut, ein Studenten-Wohnheim und einige Buero-Gebaeude. Eine "Geisterstadt" soll Masdar City aber nicht sein. Aus Masdar City wurde eine Freihandels-Zone gemacht und es wurden private Investoren in das Projekt zugelassen. Ingenieur Matthias Schuler von Transsolar sagt "Der neue Master-Plan von Masdar City sei eine Katastrophe, er zerstoert die Vision". Eine neue, 81 Meter breite Avenue soll gebaut werden, die sich quer durch die Stadt zieht. Dies widerspricht dem Ursprungs-Plan, mit einem dichten, oeffentlichen Verkehrsnetz anstatt Privat-Autos. Es wird berichtet, Finnland nehme international eine Pionier-Rolle ein mit seinem Projekt fuer ein Atom-Muell-Endlager. Finnland baut bereits 15 Jahre an diesem Endlager. Der Standort befindet sich auf der Insel Olkiluoto, vor der Westkueste Finnlands; der Bau des Tiefenlagers fuer radioaktive Abfaelle wurde seit 2004 begonnen. Ab 2025 soll dort in 400 Metern Tiefe, Atom-Muell aus den finnischen AKWs dauerhaft eingelagert werden. Die Vorgaben der EU verlangen, dass der strahlende Abfall dort fuer mindestens 100'000 Jahre sicher sein muss. Ob solche Vorgaben verlaesslich sind, sei eine philosophiesche Frage, sagte der SRF-Korrespondent fuer Nord-Europa. Heute wisse man nicht einmal wie die Welt in 100 Jahren aussehen werde! Brennstaebe aus einem AKW muessen zunaechst mehrere Jahrzehnte lang in Abkuehl-Becken zwischengelagert werden, bevor diese ins Endlager gehen koennen. Fuer das Endlager in Olkiluoto wurden die aktuell hoechsten verfuegbaren Standards von Technik und Wissenschaft angewandt. Es gab jedoch auch in Finnland Widerstand gegen das Projekt. AKWs produzieren (nur) einige wenige Jahrzehnte Energie, dafuer entstehen dann hochgefaehrliche Abfaelle, welche ueber Zehntausende von Jahren sicher verwahrt werden muessen. Projekt-Gegner befuerchten, dass ein unter- irdisches Leck im Endlager die Ostsee atomar verstrahlen koennte! In Finnland haben es Atomkraft-Gegner schwer; es gibt zwar auch in Finnland Diskussionen um eine Energie-Wende hin zu erneuerbaren Energie-Quellen. In Finnland gibt es jedoch keine direkt- demokratischen Mitsprache-Moeglichkeiten; die Atom-Gegner koennen das Thema also nicht zu einer Volksabstimmung bringen. In italienischen Zeitung wird sein verzoegerter Ruecktritt als "Ruecktritt in Slow Motion" kommentiert.
