The first building of the prestigious Japanese architect Kuma Kengo was officially opened in Switzerland on the campus of the "EPFL". It is the so-called "ArtLab", a place where the broad public finds information on the subjects of Arts, Humanities and Natural Sciences. The 250 meters long "ArtLab" is an alliance between a traditional wooden building and industrial aesthetics. The total costs were 35.5 Mio. Swiss francs and construction started in August 2014. With his impressive project, Mr. Kuma Kengo won the competition for the "ArtLab" in 2012. Inside the building, there are three areas, at the "Montreux Jazz Cafe" more than 10,000 digitized video-clips are available together with the "Montreux Jazz Heritage Lab". Then comes the special exhibition "Noir c'est noir?" (Black is Black?). In the last section, called "DataSquare", the "EPFL" shows what "Big Data" means for science. The visitors see the "Blue Brain Project", a replica of the human brain and the "Venice Time Machine", which has digitized 1,000 years of the Italian City of Venice. The well-known Japanese architects "SANAA" have already built the "Rolex Learning Center" on the "Campus" in the past. Auf dem Gelaende (Campus) der "EPFL" wurde das erste Gebaeude des angesehenen japanischen Architekten Kuma Kengo in der Schweiz feierlich eroeffnet. Es ist das so-genannte "ArtLab", ein Ort wo der breiten Oeffentlichkeit Informationen zu den Themen Kunst-, Geistes- und Natur-Wissenschaften vermittelt wird. Das 250 Meter lange "ArtLab" ist eine Verbindung zwischen einem traditionellem Holzbau und Industrie-Aesthetik. Die gesamten Kosten betrugen 35,5 Mio. Schweizer Franken und Baubeginn war im August 2014. Mit seinem eindruecklichen Projekt hat Kuma Kengo 2012 den Wettbewerb fuer das "ArtLab" gewonnen. In the ecologically important Ross Sea, a surface area of 1.55 million square kilometers is put under protection; that corresponds to a size such as Germany, France and Great Britain together. For at least 35 years, any commercial fishing is prohibited in the biggest part of the new protected area. The negotiations were launched in 2012; according to the New Zealand Foreign Minister, the agreement brings "the protection of the sea, the sustainable fisheries and the interests of research into a balance". The negotiations were conducted within the framework of the "Commission for the Conservation of the Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)"; unanimity of the members is required for resolutions. A union of various organizations, including "Antarctic Ocean Alliance" praised the decision as "epoch- making"; it is the first protection zone of this kind in international waters. The region is considered a treasure chamber of the sea with many unique creatures; penguins, seals and many species of fish live there. In the Antarctic, there are numerous research stations that investigate the effects of climate change on the seas. The environmental foundation "WWF" criticized that the agreement will only last for 35 years for the time being; marine protection zones need to be established on a permanent basis, said Chris Johnson of "WWF Australia". The chief editor wrote, "With Hillary Clinton, it might have even gotten worse. She suggested that China should be surrounded by a missile-defensive shield if the country did not exert enough pressure on North Korea because of its nuclear weapons."
